Denon D9000

I learned to spin CD's on Numark CDN88s. I noticed that the smooth analog like cueing and pitch bending gave other CD djs alot of problems at first. But most of them liked it once they got used to it.

My 88's died at BM this year, so I just sprung for the rackmount denon d9000. They are rock solid cd units with alot of cool features, but I think the cuing and even more the jog wheel pitch bending is pitiful. The amount of pitch bend on the 88's was proportional to the speed at you turned the dial. If you suddenly stopped turning the dial, the pitch would return to nominal right away. The denons have this 1 second lag before they normalize. It's a fricking nightmare. The best example is if you spin the wheel real fast and then stop it suddenly. It takes more then a second before the pitch returns to normal. I dont understand how can be useful. I am seriously think about returning them.

I know the 9000 can accept software updates, but does anyone know if denon listens to its customers enough to care to make changes.

I think the numark feel of the jog wheel is far superior. I'll have another week and 1/2 to try to get used to it before I return them and exchange them for CDN95's

    Hi Psydway!

Wow you scored the D9000!??? These are by far the most advanced dual cd player out there. I can't wait to try out the alpha play and all that stuff.

Honestly out of all the dual decks I've tried, I like my tascam cdx-1700 the best...

Mainly because of its precise pause mode when cuing a beat and of the smoooooooooooth jog wheel bending it does.

The way it works with the tascam is like this, you jog it forward and the pitch goes up to whatever your pitch scale max value is and when you let it go it drops back to the pitch you are in. This way the track doesn't get bend or tweaked like the cdj-100 will do to it.

I am sure you will get used to the d9000 fairly quick but say, did you consider the Denon D6000's? They just came out and i am sure they are wayyy improved. Not sure about the price cut yet...

Anyway brother, good luck with the setup, but don't settle for anything but the best for you. See you this weekend under the stars.

I would go for Pioneer CMX-3000 - they're excellent, and sturdy, and everyone knows how to play on them. I didn't like any of the Denon rack-mountable decks at all. Numark 88s were pretty nice, but I think Pioneers are superior.

right so i used psydway's d9000's over the weekend and...

the unit BLOWS so bad that after two 30 minutes bitchin sessions we finally agreed not to disrepsect it any longer and just return it asap.

for a 1000 dollar you get a bad design layout, a crappy job wheel, a shitty search/scan function, a not so nice cue-button, and ofcourse, jst like tascam and other brands claming MP3 playback, the D9000 do not allow you to dj mp3s!!!!

total bs, we will not buy denon dual decks anytime soon.

yes, my experience with denon rack decks has been equally pitiful. the old "goa trash" venue (weekly in nyc) used to have denon racks on the house system. after one night where i had to phase in half my tracks cuz it took me forever and a day to get two songs beat matched, i finally resorted to bringing my own decks.

but to be honest i've never liked the rack cdj set up for djing trance. i always felt like a wedding dj ;) gimme the 100's anyday over the CMX (which is still admittedly miles ahead of denon)

i've never had problems with rack-mounted CDJs except these lame Denons.. argh. Pioneers and Numarks are good. I'd stick with those.

I am the exact same way! In fact, that's exactly what I did the first time I played out - they set me up on a set of CMX-3000s, and after one "mix" (I use the term loosely in this case), I was like, "Dude, I don't care what else you put me on, but you've got to get me off this." I ended up finishing out on a pair of Pioneer CDJ-100s.

strange.. the CMX 3000 has the same mechanics as all the other Pioneer CD players, same cueing mechanism, very similar jog wheel touch, etc. The CMX 5000 (lower end model) jog wheel is quite a bit looser, which has given me some trouble in the past - but not so bad that I couldn't mix with it. Maybe the deck you were using was broken..

I don't think so. No one else had a problem with it.

This may be a dumb question, but I've only used a couple of CD decks - is the whole "1 jog dial rotation = 1 second" thing standard across all systems, or are they different?

hmm.. i am not sure, actually - all the jog wheels feel different, I usually just pause as close to the cue point as possible, then fine tune to the exact spot.

to each their own i guess :)

it's been a while since i used the CMX, maybe i'd have an easier time of it now. pretty sure it was the 3000 though, and definately not broken. i just remember not being able to get a feel for the jog dial for the life of me.

but again, i just prefer the dual table top player set up.

Well, I returned the D9000. Good riddence.

While at the store I played around with the CMX-3000. They a 100% better then the D9000. I liked size of the large jog wheel, but mechanically it felt filmsy. It felt ok pitch wise. But it hard to tell in the store because it was mounted vertically on the wall.

Funny thing was I tried the Denon standalone 5000 unit with the rotating platter and slipmat. It had all the features of the D9000 but obviously without a jobwheel because it had a moving platter. It actually felt pretty good and very vinyl like.

I just cant believe that they screwed up the implementation of the jog wheel so bad on the 9000.

Well, I'm going back to numark. I think that they make the best rackmount deck by far. The mechanical design of the jog wheel is rock solid and its pitch bend implementation is just right for me. (That might also be because I learned on them). At some level it it just what you are used to.
